¡Bienvenido al Mes de la Herencia Hispana!
From September 15 to October 15, we honor the vibrant cultures, rich histories, and lasting contributions of Hispanic and Latino (Latinx) communities across the United States. But why does this celebration start in the middle of the month? There’s a meaningful reason behind it.
Back in 1968, Congress and President Lyndon B. Johnson established National Hispanic Heritage Week, choosing September 15 as the kickoff date—not arbitrarily, but because it marks the independence anniversaries of several Central American nations.
Independence Dates from Spain:
- September 15, 1821 – Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua
- September 16, 1810 – Mexico
- September 18, 1810 – Chile
Independence from Great Britain:
- September 21, 1981 – Belize
Fast forward to 1988, when President Ronald Reagan signed a law expanding the celebration to a full month. The following year, President George H. W. Bush officially declared September 15 to October 15 as National Hispanic Heritage Month.
