One Book One Community

A Secret Gift, the true story of desperation and compassion in Canton during the Great Depression, is the book selected by the Mayor's Literacy Commission for the 2013 One Book, One Community program. Author Ted Gup, a former Cantonian, tells how one man (his grandfather, Sam Stone) saved Christmas in 1933 for many hard-hit area families. Stone's gifts of cash were gratefully received by those who had responded with pleading letters to his small ad in the Canton Repository signed with the fictitious name "B. Virdot." The Mayor's Literacy Commission and the program's major co-sponsors Malone University and the Stark County District Library invite you to attend the program's special events and book discussions.
