Basic Skills
Basic Skills: Parts of a Computer
Learn how to identify the parts of a computer: CPU (Central Processing Unit), monitor, mouse, and keyboard. Learn about storage devices such as CDs, memory sticks, and external hard drives. Become familiar with the basic set-up of a computer and the purpose of connections; power supplies including surge plugs and extension cords, and their usage. (Also part of the Senior Surfers Series)
Basic Skills: Mouse
Learn about the different mouse styles; cleaning and maintenance; gain an understanding of the right and left click, as well as using the mouse to scroll up and down on a page; then practice your new skills with fun games. (Also part of the Senior Surfers Series)

Learn the desktop functions and the components found on your computer; begin with learning to launch a program from the Start menu or the desktop; open, save, and close computer programs; understand the purpose of a Menu bar, Toolbar, Scrollbars, and Print in computer programs. Basics Skills: Word I
Understand open, close, and save for a Word document; basic skills such as the ribbons (Home), groups, and buttons. Learn to use the Contextual Toolbars, the importance of Cut, copy and paste; basic formatting including font alignment, font styles, bold, italicize, and underline. Computer Running Slow?
You know there's something wrong with your computer, but the neighbor kid and tech support talk in a language you don't understand. This class will focus around the terms Spyware, Malware, Viruses, Hackers, and why they can affect your computer. We'll also discover ways to keep your computer protected from these threats and breathe new life into your online exploration.

You will learn about the world of E-Resources through the Ohio E-book project, Free-eBooks.net, Google Books, Kobo.com, and more. Learn about the necessary downloads for each; download e-books and audio materials offered.
Basics Skills: Word I
Understand open, close, and save for a Word document; basic skills such as the ribbons (Home), groups, and buttons. Learn to use the Contextual Toolbars, the importance of Cut, copy and paste; basic formatting including font alignment, font styles, bold, italicize, and underline. At the end of the class, you will create a flyer or handout using the formatting skills practiced in the class. (Also part of the Job Skills Series)
Word II
Continue the series with Word learning the Insert ad Page Layout Ribbons. Learn the basics of creating bullet lists; the use of tabs; how to format Headers and Footers in your document; learn how to use columns and tables; insert Hyperlinks into your document including URLs and email; and learn some basic editing skills using the comment feature. Learn about sorting information inside your Word document as well as the Smart Art and Word Art options found on the insert Ribbon. You will create a custom letter to be used in the Word III class. Excel I
Learn to open, close, and save an excel worksheet; review the ribbons (Home and Insert), groups and buttons; including cut, copy, and paste; Font, Alignment, Number, Styles, Cells and Editing; gain an understanding of the difference between a worksheet and workbook; develop a formatted Workbook and Worksheet by learning the basic formatting skills such as cell formatting (merge and center), auto fill box, specific key strokes such as date and time, copy and paste; AutoSum. Excel II
Continue working with Excel when concentrating on the Formulas and Page Layout Ribbons; obtain knowledge of components of a basic Excel formula (add, subtract, multiply, and divide); sort information in ascending and descending order. (Also part of the Job Series)

Learn to create, store, and access a template.
Word IV: Picture Toolbar
Learn to insert images, photos, and objects in Microsoft Word. Then learn about the contextual toolbars that are associated with the images, photos, charts, and tables.
Excel I

Learn how to identify the parts of a URL and how to input a URL into a Web browser to visit a site for which you have the address; learn how to copy and paste a URL from an electronic document into a Web browser's address bar or vice versa; learn to print only the desired information from a Web site and identify a hypertext link (URL) embedded within a Web page and, where possible, learn to identify the home Web site within the hyperlink text before clicking and following the link; learn to save URLs as "bookmarks" or "favorites."
